Last week I was invited to take part in something amazing! I was invited to try out the first Virtual Reality Space Float experience in Hong Kong. During one hour I was looking at Earth orbiting views from the International Space Station while floating in a zero gravity environment in a tank of salty water, which is exactly what astronauts experience while floating in space! Only 550 people have experienced what it is like to be an astronaut so this is a great chance for everyone to feel what it is like to float in space.
I arrived to Float On Hong Kong, where they already offered Therapy Floats. The Therapy Floats have a lot of benefits: they are a perfect meditative method of healing, wellness and beauty. But now Float On Hong Kong is collaborating with Space VR, and in my opinion is the perfect combination.
Both Lulu from Float On and Isabel from Space VR were extremely nice and explained to me the whole experience I was about to embark on.
All the footage consists of a half Earth Orbit directly from the International Space Station (ISS), so you will see how you are orbiting Earth and seeing different countries. Don’t worry, there is a lady speaking through headphones that explains to you in which part of the world you are, since sometimes if there is cloud coverage it is difficult to guess where you are in the ISS. Additionally, there is really relaxing music in the background that makes you feel completely relaxed.
My most favourite part was that there is also footage from the Apollo missions that went to the moon, so you will feel like you are standing on the lunar surface while seeing the Earth rise over the horizon. It is unreal. See below a picture taken with the phone through the Space VR goggles:
This is the first Float VR in Hong Kong. I can see they are going to have great success since Space X is their future partner to deliver a new satellite, called Overview1, to capture the best video footage for Space VR. The whole experience is one hour, but believe me time passes really fast. This is the perfect gift or a treat for you any time of the day. I highly recommend it, you can book your orbit through @spacevr_float or you can also make a booking through this link:
Special thanks to my photographer and friend Mike Sakas.
